Funeral Service Music Ideas

Music plays an important part in any funerals services, and different types of funerals services offer different opportunities for music.

Music for church funerals

For funerals in church, music and singing can be included:

• when people are coming into the church (The Prelude)
• as the funeral procession enters the church (The Entrance Song)
• in the middle of the service as a Psalm, such as "The Lord is My Shepherd"
• as part of the service, usually a maximum of two hymns
• at the final commendation, if performed (The Song of Farewell)
• as the funeral procession departs (The Recessional)

Music for cremations

Cremation funeral services are usually 30 minutes in duration, with the actual service around 20 minutes long. Any funeral songs can be sung:

• when the funeral procession arrive
• as a solo during the service
• as a communal hymn, led by the soloist
• at the committal (though this is usually instrumental)
• when the family and mourners leave​

Funeral arrangements by Funeral Directors

For the majority of families, the person who deals with most of the arrangements is their funeral director. The funeral director will organise the paperwork, book the church or crematorium, and arrange transportation, etc.

All funeral directors in Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire know of Singers for Funerals, but many families actually book us direct. When you book us to sing, we will ask for the funeral name, date and funeral director's details, so we can liaise with them directly.
